Welsh Castles Relay

This is one of the undoubted highlights of the running calendar in Wales, as over 58 teams compete in running 210 miles long the length of Wales over 20 “stages” in two days. The Welsh Castles Relay is held over the second weekend in June, and seems to be always blessed with warm weather! This year the race will be held on Saturday June 12th and Sunday June 13th, and is organized with great style by the Les Croupiers Running Club. Brackla have been honored to have being continuously competing now in the Castles for the last 8 years, and for all involved it becomes a unique way to travel across our beautiful country as each stage varies in length and degree of difficulty, although its safe to conclude everyone is challenging!

As with the Tour de France, the toughest stages are designated as “mountain stages” of which there are six, and although the Castles is a team event, each stage is a head-to-head race. Over the years the Harriers have had a consistent record, and had our “stars” most notably winning stages with Sharon Ford, Nick Xavier and Alun Woods.

We will now if the club has been successful in gaining entry into the 2009 Castles by March 9th, and if so a list will be put up on the club notice board inviting members who would like to join the team to add their names and if known, their preferred stage/s to run.

For a comprehensive guide to the Welsh Castles Relay check out the Les Croupiers website. Here you can also see profiles of each of the 20 stages, and begin deciding which one you may wish to put your name forward for. Rest assured by talking to fellow members, the stories of the various stages will be recounted, many with harsh memories of pain and “the horror, the horror of those hills!”

Entry for the 2010 race will be known by March 12th; For more information regarding the 2010 race see John Morgan at the Club.

Steve Ovett and JPR Williams are just a few of the legendary athletes who have used the sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr, Bridgend as a base for their training and especially the highest dune, the mother of all sand dunes, the highest in Europe, known to one and all as “The Big Dipper”. Running up it is a harsh challenge just in itself, but the fun continues with an eventual second long climb, off road rough moorland, and several streams towards the finish!Welcome to the Pudding Race, an annual Christmas tradition that draws runners from far and wide to compete in a truly memorable race, guaranteed to test every muscle and sinew in your body!

Race History
The Pudding Race was started in 1990 by Bridgend AC who organised the race for 10 years, handing over to the Brackla Harriers Club in 2000. The original race route took in the stepping stones by Ogmore castle, a route abandoned after heavy rain submerged the stones in year 2!
